Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the body's ability to regulate blood sugar, leading to various complications if left unmanaged. In Taraba State, like many other regions in Nigeria, diabetes has emerged as a significant public health concern, primarily due to rising obesity rates, poor diet, and limited access to healthcare. Despite the growing prevalence, awareness about diabetes and its proper management remains relatively low in some parts of the state. Poor diagnosis, inadequate treatment, and lack of community education contribute to the challenges in diabetes management. This study aims to evaluate the level of diabetes awareness and management practices in Taraba State, assessing both healthcare provider efforts and the general public’s understanding of the disease.
The incidence of diabetes is increasing in Taraba State, yet awareness about its symptoms, risks, and management strategies remains limited. This lack of awareness contributes to late diagnoses and inadequate treatment, leading to preventable complications such as kidney failure, blindness, and cardiovascular disease. Despite the availability of healthcare facilities, there is a gap in proper diabetes education, particularly in rural areas. This study will evaluate the state of diabetes awareness and management in Taraba State, with a view to improving public health outcomes related to the disease.
The study will focus on diabetes awareness and management in urban and rural communities within Taraba State. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining accurate data on patient management practices and barriers to healthcare access in remote areas.
